Ingredients & Materials

  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup water
  • acrylic paint (I used tempera since all kids were painting)
  • paint brushes
  • toothpicks
  • rolling pin
  • Halloween cookie cutters

Preheat oven to 250.  Mix salt, flour, and water in a bowl…

…until a soft dough forms

On a floured surface, knead until smooth (do not add too much flour as this will cause the dough to crack) and roll out dough with a rolling pin…

…about 1/4″-1/2″ thick.

Cut out shapes with cookie cutters.  Use toothpicks to draw lines or texture on cut-outs, and also to do holes for hanging, before baking.  Bake for 2  hours.  Let sit at least 4 hours, or better yet, overnight.

ps. Acrylic paint will give your “ornaments” a more professional look, but if you’re working with a 2, 4, and 5 year old, I strongly suggest using washable tempera.  Just sayin’!
